Participation conditions of the Berlinale Talent Campus #9


If you are interested in applying, please read through the following participation conditions for the Berlinale Talent Campus #9.

A) Qualification

Your application for the Berlinale Talent Campus will only be processed if you meet the following requirements:

  • a) You are fluent in the English language.
  • b) You fill out the application form correctly and entirely in English. In case you are selected as participant, please be aware that your data will be published on our website as provided by you.
  • c) You work in one of these areas: screenwriting, producing, direction, cinematography, acting, editing, sound design, film score composition, animation, art direction, production design or film journalism.
  • d) You have contributed on at least one short film that was awarded a prize, OR you made a film that screened at an international film festival, OR you have worked on a film of at least 60 minutes in length, OR you are a student in your final year at a film school or in a post-graduate film programme.
  • e) You have not participated in previous editions of the Berlinale Talent Campus (with the exception of those applying to the Talent Project Market or the Berlin Today Award)..
  • f) You have submitted a complete application, including a sample of work.
  • g) You are able to attend all 6 days of the Campus.

Please note that the application is individual. We cannot accept team applications. You must have obtained the consent of the other copyright owners for the use of the work sample submitted as stated below.

B) Application

The application consists of three parts (part 3 is optional):

Part 1: Online application
First you must accept the conditions for participating in the Berlinale Talent Campus. You will then proceed to the online application form which you must complete in English.

Part 2: Submit a sample of work
You have to send in ONE of the following items as a sample of your work.

  • 2.1. FOR DIRECTORS, PRODUCERS, EDITORS, CINEMATOGRAPHERS, ART DIRECTORS, PRODUCTION DESIGNERS, SOUND DESIGNERS/COMPOSERS & ACTORS
    Your film material should be of approximately 3 minutes in length. The sample can either be a film made specifically for the Talent Campus application, a three minute short film or an excerpt or series of clips from previous work. Please do not send a fast edit show reel. The sample should be in English, or subtitled in English. It should highlight your creativity rather than a certain theme or topic. Choose a clip that shows what you’re capable of professionally.

    Technical specifications for films:
    We prefer to receive your film via upload as a digital file. The file may not exceed 150 MB, and should be coded in MPEG 2 or MPEG4 (720 x 576, 25fps, max. 6000kbps, multiplexed: audio and video in one file. We also accept receiving the film on VHS, Mini-DV or DV-CAM (PAL or NTSC). We do NOT accept DVDs, CDs, BetacamSP, Digi-Beta or any other format.

  • 2.2 For SCREENWRITERS ONLY:
    Your sample of work should be an excerpt from your screenplay or a screenplay for a short film. The maximum length is 5 pages. If this is an excerpt, please also include a synopsis (max. length: half a page). The synopsis and excerpt or screenplay should be uploaded as one single file to your online application. The accepted file format is PDF. We do NOT accept Word documents, Final Draft or other type of files. Please don't forget to identify these with your name and application number and please make sure all documents are collected and saved into one, single PDF file.

  • 2.3 For SOUND DESIGNERS/COMPOSERS ONLY:
    Instead of film material, your sample of work may also be an MP3 audio file upload (not exceeding 5MB).The maximum length is 5 minutes. You can upload this file to our website.

In addition to film material, applicants from the following fields of work may submit the following material to support their visuals:

  • 2.4 For PRODUCTION DESIGNERS and ART DIRECTORS ONLY:
    You may upload a PDF file (5 pages maximum) with photos of your production design/art direction work. Additionally, you must attach a synopsis (1 page maximum) of the project for which your designs were used. Please do not forget to identify these with your name and application number. If you decide to upload extra material, please make sure all documents are collected and saved into one, single PDF file that does not exceed 2 MB. Upload your file directly to your application where indicated.

  • 2.5 For FILM CRITICS ONLY:
    You may upload a PDF file (6 pages maximum) which consists of copies of 3 different articles that you have published in the last 2 years, including the date of publication, media in which it appeared and circulation figures. If these articles are not in English you should provide us with a good translation for each article written by yourself as a proof of your English writing skills. You have 2 options to send these: Either UPLOAD your articles as 1 file on the "upload" section of the application or SEND the copies by postal service to the Berlinale Talent Campus offices..

Part 3 (optional): HANDS-ON TRAINING PROGRAMMES
The Berlinale Talent Campus offers, in addition to the general programme, several hands-on training programmes. You must fill out a second application form, and submit a second sample of work to be considered for these programmes. You will find a link to apply for these in your online application if your field of work corresponds to the programme.

  • 3.1 For DOC STATION:
    • Doc Station is open for DIRECTORS and CREATIVE PRODUCERS. Your application should contain a treatment of 8-12 pages in one PDF. The treatment should be a summary of the feature length documentary. It should detail the beginning, middle and end of the project as you envision it. You must also fill out the application form and submit video material of up to 5 minutes, following the technical guidelines as mentioned above (see 2.1). If you cannot provide video footage, then photographs and an explanation thereof are required as an exception. These should also be in the single PDF, along with your treatment & synopsis. This may either be in English or German, however the application form must be completed in English.

  • 3.2 For SCRIPT STATION:
    Script Station is open for SCREENWRITERS. Your application should include a treatment (detailing the script’s start, middle & end) and a dialogue scene which should total 10-15 pages. These should be in one single PDF file and uploaded to your application. The screenplay should be complete at the time of the application deadline, as the jury may request the full script for the selection process. The script may either be in English or German, however the application form must be completed in English.

  • 3.3 For TALENT PROJECT MARKET:
    The Talent Project Market is open for PRODUCERS and DIRECTORS. The TPM gives around ten young filmmakers the opportunity to present their projects to established co-producers and financiers. The project must be a feature for theatrical release and suitable for an international co-production. You have to fill out the online application form, and in addition upload a 5 page treatment/synopsis for this feature plus a 5 page excerpt from the script, both in English, together in one single PDF document. You must have an advanced draft of the script ready at the time of application, and an English version of the script by the time of the festival. The TPM is also open to previous participants (producer and director alumni) of the Berlinale Talent Campus.

  • 3.4 For SCORE COMPETITION:
    The Score Competition invites composers to apply and compose a new soundtrack for selected film material. An international jury will select three composers who will write a score for a short film and have their scores recorded with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg and finalized in a professional sound and editing studio during the Berlinale Talent Campus. To apply to the Score Competition you have to upload up to 5 minutes of film including the score you composed for this film. Additionally you have to submit a short motivation about how you approach a film composing project, using examples from the submitted score.

  • 3.5 For BERLIN TODAY AWARD:
    The Berlin Today Award offers five directing talents the chance to produce a short film in cooperation with a Berlin or Brandenburg based production company. The Berlin Today Award is open to all applicants and previous participants of the Berlinale Talent Campus. The project should be aiming at a 10 minute short film, with no restrictions on genre. In the application form you will be required to provide a 1-2 sentence logline, max. 2000 character synopsis, a script, project details, budget estimate and director's statement.

  • 3.6 For TALENT PRESS:
    The Talent Press invites film critics to the Berlin International Film Festival to write daily articles on films screened at the Berlin International Film Festival and events of the Berlinale Talent Campus. Under the tutelage of prominent film writers they improve their skills to report and work within an editing team during the Campus. The articles are published online every day on the Campus website and the Talent Press website, a platform for emerging film critics and journalists from around the world. A selection of articles will be printed and distributed all over the festival on the last Campus day. Film critics applying to the Berlinale Talent Campus will automatically be considered for the Talent Press programme.

  • 3.7 For TALENT ACTORS STAGE: to be announced
    The Talent Actors Stage offers actors a range of tailor-made workshops, varying from training in acting techniques, dialogue training, successful casting, and camera acting, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations with directors, producers and screenwriters. Actors applying to the Berlinale Talent Campus will automatically be considered for the Talent Actors Stage programme.

  • 3.8 For CAMPUS POST-PRODUCTION STUDIO: to be announced
    The Campus Post-Production Studio offers an in-depth look into the practical techniques of filmmaking: shooting with the newest digital cameras, followed by digital post-production processes including editing, grading, mastering and data management. The application will be available for participants selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus #9 and will be announced separately.

  • 3.9 For CAMPUS EDITING STUDIO: to be announced
    The Campus Editing Studio is open for directors and editors, offering them the opportunity to strengthen the narrative structure of their rough cut and edit with one of the renowned Campus Studio editors, who will be extensively briefed on their project on beforehand. Around ten rough-cuts of short films or excerpts from feature films will be selected. The application will be available for participants selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus #9 and will be announced separately.

Your application to the above-mentioned programmes will not be further considered if you are not selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus.

C) Further regulations

Participant's film material or sample of work

  • 1) The participant hereby agrees that his/her photograph and data may be published on the website and in the magazine of the Berlinale Talent Campus as provided in the "Presentation" area of the online application form. (This can be customized by the participant at any time by logging into his/her profile.)

  • 2) The participant agrees that his/her sample of work submitted to the Berlinale Talent Campus may be shown publicly at the Berlinale Talent Campus, and streamed on the website of the Berlinale Talent Campus or related organisations and/or sponsors of the Berlinale Talent Campus.

  • 3) The participant agrees that the aforementioned use of his/her work may also include podcasting. This means that his/her work can be accessed and podcast and that he/she can access the works of other talents vice-versa.

  • 4) The participant agrees that his/her submitted sample of work, may be published by the Berlinale Talent Campus in full length or as an excerpt in print or television or any other multimedia format for promotional purposes of the Berlinale Talent Campus.

  • 5) The participant declares that he/she owns the copyright for the sample of work submitted, according to the relevant national and international regulations. This includes music and sound effects included in sample of work. He/she guarantees that no rights of third parties are violated by the material used in the film or other sample of work submitted. The participant unconditionally and irrevocably declares his/her copyright responsibility towards third parties in case of disputes over copyright violations. In this respect the participant exempts the Berlinale Talent Campus from all claims by third parties.

  • 6) The applicant agrees that his/her work can be presented to parties who are interested in the commercial exploitation of the short film or the work sample submitted. The Berlinale Talent Campus will not negotiate any commercial exploitation of the submitted works without a written agreement from the copyright holder.

  • 7) The Berlinale Talent Campus is not liable for any loss or damage incurred, irrespective of the cause.

  • 8) The submitted sample of work or short film will not be returned. The material which is NOT selected can be picked up at the Berlin-based offices of the Berlinale Talent Campus. Should the data carrier of the sample of work submitted not be picked up by February 28, 2011, and was not selected, it will be destroyed by the Berlinale Talent Campus.

NOTE: If you send your sample of work per postal service: Before sending your sample for the application per post, please check customs regulations and mark clearly on the package: "No commercial value, for cultural purposes only." The value of the contents should be only for customs purposes (not exceeding 15 Euros). The Berlinale Talent Campus will not be responsible for any excess incurred taxes or duties. All postal fees are the responsibility of the SENDER.

Application deadline
The Talent Campus 2011 deadline for receipt of your complete application is October 6, 2010. (This is not a postmark date! Please make sure your material arrives in our offices by this day!)

Selection of participants
Participants will be selected at the sole discretion of the Berlinale Talent Campus. Applicants selected for participation will be informed by e-mail by January 15, 2011 at the latest. The list of selected participants will be published on our website by this date. You can also consult your selection status anytime by logging into your online profile. There is no legal claim to participate in the Berlinale Talent Campus.

Reimbursement of travel expenses
A partial reimbursement of accommodation and travel expenses will be offered to participants who are not German or do not reside in Germany. The amount will be determined on an individual basis and at the discretion of the Berlinale Talent Campus.

Status of the participants
The accreditation to the Berlinale Talent Campus allows you to participate in all events at the Hebbel am Ufer Theatre. Individual tickets, however, need to be obtained for events with limited seating (free of charge for participants). As a registered participant of the Berlinale Talent Campus 2011 you are automatically accredited to the 61st Berlin International Film Festival taking place in February 2011 (www.berlinale.de), and eligible to be provided with a limited amount of tickets for Berlinale screenings, subject to availability.

Attendance
The Berlinale Talent Campus offers, free of charge, a comprehensive programme and many privileges to all participants. Your presence as a Talent on our website is a mark of distinction and a recommendation for film professionals throughout the world. In return we expect your cooperation and daily attendance at the Campus. The Berlinale Talent Campus reserves the right to remove participants from the website who abuse their accreditation, who are repeatedly absent, or who make false statements.

Privacy
The Berlinale Talent Campus respects each person's right to privacy. We do not buy or distribute personal information or your samples of work for commercial purposes. Your application data and your sample of work will be treated confidentially. Only the staff of the Berlinale Talent Campus has access to your application data. If you are selected to participate in the Berlinale Talent Campus, your profile data and your submitted sample of work, will be used as stated above (C 2-5). In particular, it may be displayed in a database at the Campus and on our website or related areas. The purpose is to improve communication between participants, experts and visitors. The purpose of this website is to encourage participants of the Berlinale Talent Campus and Campus International programmes from all areas of film and to inform the public at large about the Berlinale Talent Campus. We appreciate our visitors, their comments, and their suggestions.

Governing law
For the avoidance of doubt, this agreement is governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the event of any dispute arising out of or in connection with this agreement, exclusive place of venue shall be Berlin.
