Good Sound Makes a Film Big

Reporting from Wave-line, the post-production studio of the Score Competition.

The three finalists: Vladimir Cháb, Alexander Komlew and Camilo Sanabria

In the film industry, some parts seem more important than others and can lead to the success of the film. Sound and music composition, for instance, are some of its most tactical and meaningful parts. We can remember the successful comedies of Charlie Chaplin which had music which made them unforgettable. One of the objectives of the Berlinale Talent Campus is to develop a qualified filmmaking activity among the younger generation, and it focuses in particular on film scoring through the Score Competition. The Campus brought in some professional and international composers to talk to the youngsters and give them some useful tips.

Three young film music composers from Columbia, Germany and the Czech Republic were selected from amongst 44 applicants. They have the chance to talk to Alexandre Desplat, the celebrated French film composer. In fact, Desplat will not only listen to the works of these Talent film composers but also guide them as they finalise their scores. According to Marcie Jost, the coordinator of Score Competition, “music can change a film and big music makes a big film”. This justifies the importance of this workshop and the importance of its main mentor.

On February 13, at Wave-line, a studio situated at Bülowstraße in the heart of Berlin, Alexander Desplat doesn’t stint with his time when sharing his experiences with the young Talents. He reads their music notes, watches the film and comments on the Talents’ works. This seems like a real class where Camilo Sanabria from Columbia, said: “It’s a great time for me and more especially for my career as film producer. This programme gives me the opportunity to have more experience with the use of the new technologies”. Alexander Komlew from Germany too is excited to have worked with Alexandre Desplat and to share some experiences with him. “I am sure I will have some great contacts during the Berlinale Talent Campus which will help me achieve many projects later.”

But before these future projects can be achieved by the Talents, one of them will win a trip to the best sound studios in Los Angeles, sponsored by Dolby Laboratories. The winner of the Score Competition will be announced and awarded on February 18 at the Berlinale Talent Campus Closing Night.
